Community Education ProgrammeWainuiomata High School has run Community Education programmes since 2002, and Parkway and Wainuiomata Colleges ran night classes for many years before that. Now the National-led Government has decided to cut 80% of all funding from 2010. This has meant that we can't run any night classes unless we impose a User Pays policy, which would mean a 300% increase in fees. We can't put such an expense on our community - the people Education Minister Anne Tolley insists she wants to help. So our Community Education programme has closed. We sincerely hope this is not the end of the story. Many people have taken part in our courses over 40 years or more. That includes current and past Board of Trustees members and High School staff, as well as many other members of our community. As students or tutors (and some of us have been both, at different times) we have gained huge benefits from our night classes. We hope for a change in government policy; meanwhile we hope the members of our community can continue their Life Long Learning in some way or another! |
