Welcome to Wainuiomata High School

Wainuiomata High School - new Student Services building

Wainuiomata High School is a new multi-cultural co-educational school for girls and boys aged 13 years and above, with a roll of approximately 950 students. The school came into being on 1 January 2002, as a result of the merger of Wainuiomata College and Parkway College. An extensive rebuilding programme on the former Parkway College site has resulted in excellent modern facilities for staff and students. Over $8,000,000 has been spent on upgrading the school.

Facilities are among the best in the Wellington region and include:

  • A well-designed auditorium
  • A purpose-built student services centre
  • Five computer laboratories
  • A new technology centre
  • Two full size gymnasiums and a weight training facility
  • State-of-the-art library
  • Six new science laboratories

A number of other classrooms have been refurbished or built new.

The school has well-developed systems to encourage students to perform at their peak, and emphasises traditional values of respect, honesty, courtesy, cooperation and concern for others. Support systems assist students with their problems and concerns. We believe a school must take a holistic view of the individual, and we understand that a student cannot be an effective learner if distracted by personal, family or health problems. Wainuiomata High School is therefore a "full service" school with extensive pastoral support available.

The sense of warmth and caring that we emphasise is also seen in the community which takes pride in being a close knit and progressive town. Wainuiomata is located only 15 minutes from the city centre of Lower Hutt and 30 minutes from central Wellington. It was one of the earliest European settlements in the Wellington region, and today is part of Lower Hutt City. Wainuiomata is the gateway to the Rimutaka Forest Park. The area is rich in mountains, rivers and native bush walks.

The Uniform page features changes to uniform made in recent years (compulsory for Years 9, 10 and 11 students). It has examples of acceptable and unacceptable shoe styles (compulsory for all students).

The website was first created for the former Wainuiomata College in 1998. It was rebuilt after the merger of Wainuiomata and Parkway Colleges into Wainuiomata High School, January 1, 2002, and then redesigned in September 2003. It has been redesigned again over the last 12 months. We have converted all current pages from our .asp database (which proved frustrating to understand and maintain) back to classic HTML using stylesheets.

This site should be suitable for Netscape 4 / Explorer 4 and subsequent browsers, at most settings, although it will display best at 1024 x 768. Please let us know if it isn't: e-mail the webmaster.

No students or animals have been harmed yet during the construction and maintenance of this web site
