Whanau Māori / Māori Faculty

Acting HoF: Tupu Williams

The Māori faculty is the largest in the southern North Island and includes five trained bilingual or immersion teachers with subject strengths across the curriculum. The Whānau Unit, which started in 2003, is a prominent feature of the school. Most subjects will be instructed in the medium of Te Reo Māori, and English is compulsory. Students can also take Te Reo Māori as a subject.

Courses:
Te Reo Māori Years 9-13 (students are placed according to their existing ability, which might include Juniors in NCEA courses).
Immersion Māori / Rūmaki (includes English, Pāngarau, Pūtaiao, Tikanga-a-Iwi, Māori, Hangarau, Ngā Toi, Kori Tinana.)
Bilingual Years 9-10 (includes English, Maths, Science, Social Studies, Māori, Technology, Arts, PE.)

All form classes are bilingual over all year levels. These form classes provide ongoing support as the students move into the mainstream.

Contestants in regional and national Ngā Manu Korero competitions have a good record of success, and are growing from strength to strength. Our Kapa Haka group Te Tira Whakaau represented this region again at the National Kapa Haka Competition in 2010, gaining a very creditable 11th place in a field of 40 entrants.

The school's wharenui Te Ea Whakawaia (below - click on the pictures to see full-size versions) supports the work of the faculty and is used by all students in the school.
