Short Stay Visits

International Students Short Stay Visits

Wainuiomata High School welcomes students who come for a short stay group visit. Students can be between 10 and 19 years of age (we are approved by the Ministry of Education to host Young International Students aged between 10 and 13 years of age) and will be hosted by school families or by one of our wonderful Homestays.

Students will be able to combine learning English or increasing their confidence in spoken English with a fun cultural experience. We offer activities such as: ten-pin bowling, laser strike, horse riding, over-night stays on Wainuiomata Marae, flax weaving, visiting New Zealand's National Museum, rock climbing, tramping in a National Forest, watching an All Black game (when in season and playing in Wellington), visiting a farm... - our list of possible activities is endless!

A combination of school facilities and equipment, local venues and outside providers is used. Our Homestays are unique for Wellington. They are large, roomy, spacious, warm, comfortable homes with drive-on access, and many are sited next to scenic reserves, on life-style blocks of land (and have pet sheep) and close to bus stops for ease of travelling to school.

All students are placed in a class at their year level and encouraged to participate in all activities as a member of the class. Pupils also receive tuition in English and are usually withdrawn from the class for part of the day for this purpose.

Information for parents

Information for parents in regard to group visits including enrolment forms, Students Information Handbook and all other relevant information can be found at the bottom of this page.

Immigration

All international students require a study visa and/or study permit issued by the New Zealand Immigration Service. This permit gives permission to study at Wainuiomata High School for a specific period of time. As it can take up to 6 weeks to obtain these permits we recommend you enrol early so that we can issue a letter for the Immigration Service to begin the permit process.

Please note: a permit is required for all international students, including those whose parents are on a work permit.

For group visits, students are required to be listed on the group visa.

Full details of visas and permit requirements, advice on rights to employment in New Zealand and reporting requirements are available through the New Zealand Immigration Service and can be viewed on their website at www.immigration.govt.nz
